Hoop Time

On Tuesday the 7th of August; grades 5 to 6 participated in a basketball competition called Hoop Time. Our school would be competing against other schools. Everybody who payed and brought back their form got to go and there were 2 emergencies. We were separated in to 3 teams the rookies, future stars and the all stars. The rookie team are the people who never have played basketball. The future stars are the people who play basketball. The all stars are the people who play basketball and are really good and have some skills. I was in the all stars. The teams were tough but every Kerrimuir team except 1 future stars team made it to the grand final. Unfortunately every Kerrimuir team that made it to the finals lost. My team lost 16 to 10. But the good thing is we tried our hardest. Every team had a coach and our team’s coach was Jamie’s dad Brett Simpson. But surprisingly the team that DIDN’T MAKE IT TO THE GRAND FINAL GOT INTO THE REGIONAL BASKETBALL FINALS. Everybody in that team was really happy and all the other teams were proud of them too.

K.P.S Dancing

K.P.S dancing
Mostly every Monday we did some dancing in the multipurpose room.
The kinds of dances we do are nut bush,
Bus stop and Macarena. Not everyone knew how to do the bus stop. Mr Chaffer taught us how to do it.  I knew how to do the nut bush and the Macarena. We danced with the music to the moves.

Olympic day at Kerrimuir P.S

On Friday the 10th of August Kerrimuir primary school had their own Olympics day. We each got put in different countries and wore our countries colours to school. I got put into Iran. All the teachers set up activities and we all went around to the activities. My favourite activity was the running relay. At the end of the day we found out the results, India came 3rd, Malaysia came 2nd and Iran came 1st!! The winning teams got a medal.

This was a group doing balloon volley ball.

Buddies- Origami Olympic Rings

Every second week all the preps come into our building and we have buddies. The Olympics was on so we all agreed on making some origami Olympic rings with our buddies. We made them with square pieces of paper and helped our buddies make them. To make them it required folding, sticking and cutting.  All of our Olympic rings looked fantastic and we all had fun spending time with our buddies!
Here is what they looked like.

Super Egg & the Kerrimuir Gift

Last term, the last day.....is..... SUPER EGG and the KERRIMUIR GIFT!!!
Our class was great and guess what we won both of them, Jade for the Gift (running) and James for the Super Egg.
For the Super Egg it was a very close match with Super Egg she was a very round so it rolls more easily but James’ egg was much heavier so it won ,fair square.
As the Super Egg finished the Gift came around the corner. The grade 3s started then the 4s, preps, 1s, 2s, 5s and 6s. Jade was the winner for the boys in grade 5 so he went in the big race with the winning teacher and other winning students. On your marks ready set go!! Jade ran so fast and came first even though he was near the end. He got a nice certificate as well. Since the Super Egg and the Gift is annual event I hope next year is as good as this year.

Twilight Sports

On the 27th of March most of the students of Kerrimuir Primary School came to the oval at around 6:00pm and came to do some sports.

The sports that we were doing were the teddy bear race was for the preps, they had to carry a teddy bear on their back and run to the finish line. The balloon race for the grade 5\6, they had to run to the end of the line with a balloon when they got to the finish line they had to blow up the balloon, tie it up then pop it and run back to the end. The three legged race for the preps and the buddies they had to tie a bandanna around their legs so it became three legs, then they had to run to the end. A jumping race for the friends and parents they had to connect arms and jump very far and if someone disconnected arms or fall over they had to start again. A relay race for the parents and one of the parents fell down. The waddle race was with a ball between the grade 4 students’ legs and run all the way to the end without dropping the ball between their legs. The grade 2’s did the egg and spoon race they had get a hardboiled egg from home then put it on a spoon and run\jog\walk to the finish line. The grade 3’s did the sack race they had to run with a sack on them to the finish line. The school and house captains\vice captains had to set up the whole thing! There was also food and drink. It was really fun.                         By Chris Moutafis

Mental Maths

On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week, we have to do a worksheet on General maths. There are only 20 questions on the sheet, and we are given about 5 minutes to complete them. Because we are learning about graphs, when we finish, we have to draw up a graph. But it’s not just for you; it’s for everyone on your table!

For example, the first week we did it, I had the scores of Charlotte, Serena, Emma and myself on my line graph. To tell the lines apart from each other, we were all different colours. But for some people there was a problem; what happens when people get the same score? Well, we couldn’t put the dot somewhere else, because it wouldn’t tell you the right score. So we had to do a dot with half one colour, half the other colour. On one of the days, three people on my table got the same score! That was probably my favourite dot.

The ‘Y’ axes was the scores (1-20), and the ‘X’ axes was the days. The aim was to improve or maintain your score each day. We are now doing our third week of mental maths, and are pretty good at the system now.

Buddies in Term 1

In Year 5 we are fortunate to be part of the Better Buddies program!  Each one of us is paired with a Prep student.  Each Thursday we spend time with our buddies doing different activities.  Some of these include: reading picture storybooks to the preps, writing a "Recipe for Friendship", playing tabloid sports and making buddy cubes.  In the last week of Term 1 the Year 5 students gave a special buddy bear to their prep buddies.  We love being in the Better Buddies program!

Impact Leadership Conference

This Monday 30 students from Years 5 & 6 will be travelling by train to the Melbourne Convention Centre to attend the 2012 Impact Leadership Conference.  We are all looking forward very much to attending the conference and hearing the speakers throughout the day.  There may even be a chance to meet some well-known young leaders!  Make sure you bring a small bag containing your snack, lunch, water bottle, hat, notepad and pens.

For those who are staying at school on Monday, I hope you have a wonderful day with the students from 6C!  I'd love to hear all about your special day.

See you all soon,
From Mrs Hamilton

CALC

5A had a great start to the year!  So far we have spent time playing some games, getting to know all the students in our class, and discussing what it means to be part of a successful classroom.

These activities are all part of Kerrimuir's "CALC" program - "Creating A Learning Community".  It is important to establish class values, work expectations and develop the class community at the start of each year.  This helps us to work well as a team and treat each other with respect.  And all of these good things enable us to improve our learning - which is why we're here!

The students had fun challenging each other in a game of 'untie the knot' - well done girls on winning the first round! Good luck for next time boys :)

Hello from Guatemala!

Hi 3/4B

Are you having fun at school? I am missing you all but we are having a great time in Guatemala. It is a very interesting place with friendly people.

My sister's wedding was yesterday. The ceremony was held in the gardens of a beautiful macadamia nut farm, just out of a town called Antigua.

We are leaving Guatemala tomorrow and I will be back at school on Thursday. I am looking forward to seeing you all and celebrating Christmas together!

Say hi to everyone for me!

See you soon,
From Mrs Hamilton

Taiko drumming

Taiko Drumming

On the 14th of May my dad and my mum played the Japanese taiko drumming at the Box hill community art centre. Everyone was so excited to play the drumming. When my parents played, everyone was so amazed. We did some playing the drumming too. We were all happy. I’d think that everyone enjoyed. I really enjoyed!
